Push Community Initiative(PCI)
Push Community Initiative (PCI) is an indigenous NGO formed in 2019 with the desire to empower communities to keep children safe from all forms of abuse. This was informed by the increasing cases of child rights abuses manifested in high rates of defilement, neglect, abandonment, sacrifice, child labour and violence resulting into high rates of school dropout by mostly the girl child within communities of eastern Uganda.
PCI is registered by the National NGO Bureau as a Non-Governmental Organization under Reg No.5101 and permit No.5491.PCI currently operates in Mbale District of Eastern Uganda .
Strategic Principle:
“Here for Children”. We are a child centered organization. We believe that well nurtured, empowered and skilled children are the answer to poverty, global peace and development. We are convinced that children matter in our pursuit for lasting Global Peace and Development. We will do all that is within our means to protect and support children to achieve their dreams.
Our programme:
PCI program interventions focus on education, livelihoods, health and child protection. Our project implementation model empowers beneficiaries to graduate from vulnerability by increasing their skills and knowledge.
Our experience and philosophy:
We believe that supporting adolescent girls and women is the entry to sustainable child rights protection .We also believe that empowerment as opposed to relief is the best way to sustain families and communities to prevent and respond to child abuse. Our interventions seek to empower and build resilience among our clients and aim to graduate them from vulnerability
For the past three years, PCI has directly supported 1200 girls and young women (AGYW) through the 1) Skills for Education (S4E) project funded by RightsNow Foundation (2020) 2) Increasing access to HIV/AIDS services among adolescent girls and young women in Bufumbo HIV/AIDS project in partnership with the Program for Accessing Health Communication and Education (PACE) under the Global Fund HIV prevention and response project managed by the Aids Support Organization (TASO)(2022)and 3) the Skills for HIV/AIDS mitigation and prevention project (SHIMP) funded by the US Embassy in Uganda under the PEPFAR small grants fund(2022/2023). PCI skills training center in Bufumbo, Mbale District provides tailoring skills and beekeeping skills to adolescent girls and young women(AGYW).
The organization has established a skills training center in Bufumbo,Mbale District to sustainably empower AGYW with livelihood and empowerment skills. Through the skills center we support adolescent girls and young women in tailoring and making of reusable sanitary pads. We also train AGYW on puppet theatre for community mobilization and awareness creation and beekeeping.
projects and its activities
School Menstrual Hygiene Management (SMHM), Quite often girls 13-18 years in upper primary miss 1-3 days of primary school per month due to inability to manage menstruation. This translates into a loss of 8 to 24 school days per year. Yet with about $10 worth of sanitary pads, a girl of menstruating age could keep in school for the entire year and probably complete school.
